One of the many important programs your FTME donations support is 1:1 literacy tutoring for students who are not yet reading at grade-level standard.
Staff tutors target specific skills needed by these students. In a recent year, five students in one of TM’s 1st-grade classrooms received daily tutoring in phonics. “This daily one-on-one intervention helps the students practice the skills they have learned, use the skills in day-to-day reading and show mastery,” says Lacey Greisen, their teacher. “The students love their tutoring time, and the personal relationships they develop with their tutors.”
Our goal is every Thurgood Marshall student reading at grade level by 3rd grade, because research shows a correlation between strong literacy skills by 3rd grade and later academic success.
With FTME and parent support, our literacy-tutoring program has delivered amazing results!
- For example, of students who began working with a tutor in fall 2015, 82 percent met or exceeded growth level targets by later in the school year.
- Ninety percent of students who worked with a tutor made more growth in reading from October 2015 to March 2016 than they did in their entire previous year of school.
- In 2014-15, some 1st-graders were stuck at level B and not able to read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by spring. In 2015-16, 100 percent of 1st-graders could!
