Dramatic impact of Literacy Tutors

One of the many important programs your PTA donations support is 1:1 literacy tutoring for students who are not yet reading at grade-level standard.

In summer 2015, TM hired three staff tutors who are supervised by our reading specialist, Anne Lyons, to target specific skills needed by these students. This extra attention improves student growth.

Five students in Lacey Sheridan’s 1st grade receive daily tutoring in phonics. “This daily one-on-one intervention helps the students practice the skills they have learned, use the skills in day-to-day reading and show mastery,” says Ms. Sheridan. “The students love their tutoring time, and the personal relationships they develop with their tutors.”

Our goal is every Thurgood Marshall student reading at grade level by 3rd grade, because research shows a correlation between strong literacy skills by 3rd grade and later academic success.

With PTA and parent support, our literacy-tutoring program has delivered amazing results!

  • Our staff tutors have served 23 students in grades K-2, providing 720 hours of 1:1 tutoring (as of April 2016).
  • Of students who began working with a tutor in fall 2015, 82 percent have met or exceeded growth level targets.
  • Ninety percent of students who worked with a tutor made more growth in reading from October 2015 to March 2016 than they did in their entire previous year of school.
  • In 2014-15, some 1st-graders were stuck at level B and not able to read CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words by spring. In 2015-16, 100 percent of 1st-graders can!
